What is he reaching for? Food? no. He is reaching for a piece of paper so that he can draw a planet. This child is in an IDP camp near Nairobi. (IDP = Internally Displaced Persons). He ended up there after election-related riots erupted in and around the Kenyan capital.
What can we do for him? Lots! He's young, he's got everything ahead of him.
Should we give him food? Actually,
UNICEF are taking good care of him there. What
we try to do is give him and other boys and girls in difficult situations a glimpse of the Universe.
We want to give him education. We want to empower this little guy so that when it comes down to it, he can start being a creative participant in society.
I firmly believe that any kind of alleviation of poverty requires empowering people through education.
Don't starve kids of discovery...Finally just a word about what I mean by education.
Education is crucial but it has to be of the right kind. Imparting culturally biased knowledge as if it were important is wrong. Knowledge is not the most important. The most important is the combination formed by Openminded Values and Critical Thinking. So when I talk about Education, I mean
inspire with ideals of Peace, and empower the human mind to think independently!
Voilà. That's my two cents' worth of blogging for BAD 2008... :)
